Paul, I've decided to not go with a steel roof insert on mine, I've found an interesting fibreglass mat that's composed of two layers of fabric with filaments that stand up when wetted providing two F/G mats with a honeycombed space between. Thickness of 1/4" +/- This will provide a weatherproof insert, and look like the original fabric, with the edge trim etc.
