The notch in the springs is where the front and rear halves of the 2-piece main leafs meet. The spring pack has more flexiblity with this 2-piece main leaf verses a continuous length main leaf. Only the early trucks had this feature. If your springs are in good condition, you may still be able to read the part number stamped into the underside of the bottom leaf right next to the spring pad on the axle.
