The parts are easy to get for your transmission from VPW and other transmission companies, but can be a little expensive. Big question is how bad are they pitted? If the full face of the tooth is pitted (no case hardened surface left), then you would want to replace the gear. If pitting is sporatic over the face, then a cleaning is all you need. I have some pitted transfer case gears, but I just cleaned them and away it went, still going strong. Here's how to clean your gears of rust:

- Mix 1/4th numatic acid (used for swimming pools) with water. Place your gears in it during the day so you can monitor the cleaning. This will remove all rust.

- Mix a strong solution of baking soda and soak the gear in it for a bit to neutralize the acid, keep the mixture stired while soaking, Then wash the gear off (don't dry) and immediately soak in mineral spirits to remove water so it will not rust. Do this for all your rusted parts. Your rear oup shaft should be fine, unless you have some long deep pits on spline edges that could effect the sliding of gears.

Was the countershaft worn where the bearings ride? If so you want to replace it.

Do the same for the PTO and transfer case. When you assemble use a bottle of STP in the trans and transfer case if rust is in it also.

Get the casting number off the transmission (Top left mounting ear area) and look for a used one with the same number and rebuild it for a spare, but have it opened before you buy.

This is pretty common for trucks that have sat for years. Most guys just clean the grease of, give it a coat of paint and get to put it back out later because of the same things you found. If you do this with all the units, you then know the condition of your truck, it's dependability, and can expect years of trouble free use. Enjoy!
