I found that if they are worn they can get a ledge at the spring bush which will stop them pulling out, particularly so if they haven't seen a lot of lubrication.

I check them by prising the clamp cut apart a little and rotating them to see if the spring end rises and falls, with weight off both chassis and spring.

I find the fine thread totally useless for drawing them out, and I use my largest tapered screw thread extractor with a left hand thread which I just screw in and keep turning till it draws the pin out. Since the screw exractor has such a coarse left hand thread on it I've found it does virtually no damage to the fine grease fitting thread, though every time I've tried a puller on the fine thread it won't take the impact.
