Paul, I have been running a centered diff with 4.89's behind a V-8/ Np 540 in my '57 FF since 1989.
At highway speeds it has little or no gear whine, or gear oil smell from heat. It has been trouble-free for me in all of that time.
In my opinion, a very worthwhile modification for road use. I have a couple of stock trucks as well...quite a bit of difference.
