Sounds like the same thing I had on my old Plymouth, you pushed the door handle up to lock the drivers door and slid out the passenger door and locked it on that side. I thought it was strange because it was 1970 and everything had a lock on each side. A saftey issue I was told. Safer to get out on the passenger side, was the law in NY for many years
