It depends upon the part of the country that you were in. Originally the cooling systems of vehicles were very primitive. During the dust bowl migrations to California, cars were abandoned by the hundreds along Route 66 because of engine failures. These bags were used primarily for cooling the vehicles on the trek to California. The water was too warm and tasted like burlap, but in an emergency, when all other sources of water had been used, the bags could work in a bind. Up until the early '70's, with the completion of the Interstate hiway system, you could still see these bags on older cars traveling over the Sierras, the Grapevine, across Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico, Texas and across the Mojave Desert. California had water stops where cars could safely pull off the road to add water. I remember as a small boy watching numerous cars with their steaming hoods raised, and frantic drivers trying to pour water from their canvas bags into the radiator (there were no recovery tanks in those years either!) You youn'ins missed the fun! ha!ha!
