This is out of the B1PW Drivers manual page 42-43......RADIATOR OVERFLOW TANK (Extra Equipment)
When the engine is thoroughly warmed up and running fast, the water is circulating rapidly since the pump will be going as fast as the engine. Should the throttle suddenly be closed, the water momentarily will be going faster than the pump, and will "surge" or pile up behind the pump in the radiator. Again, in the event the engine should be put to sustained operation with little ventilation and should become over-heated the water will boil over and run out the overflow. A surge @ank is connected to the overflow pipe for the purpose of catching the water that otherwise would run out.

When the engine cools, this water syphons back into the radiator. Thisis particularlyimportantincold climateswhereanti-freezeprepa- rations are used, and also in and regions where clean water is c3t a premium. In order for the overflow tank to function, the radiator filler cap must be kept air-tight at all times.
When draining the radiator in cold weather, be sure to drain the overflow tank and the cylinder block also. Open the drain cock at the lower right-hand corner of the radiator, the drain cock on the left side of the engine at the lower edge of the water jacket, and also the drain cock on the bottom of the surge tank on Power Wagons so equipped.
