Marty, the overflow tank is nothing more than a remote extension of the top radiator tank (in effect). Assuming that you have a radiator cap that seals good, coolant from the bottom of the overflow tank gets sucked back into the top radiator tank as it cools and contracts. Works just like sucking Pepsi from a glass with a straw. Put a bad cap on the radiator and the radiator will suck air and no coolant will return from the overflow tank. Same as the straw in the glass, put a hole in it and you will suck air. This all works because the line to the overflow tank enters the tank at the bottom where there should always be coolant. Fill the radiator all the way to the top, fill the overflow tank half way, and install a new radiator cap. The system works real good! More coolant to transfer heat to the radiator fins means a more effective cooling system.
