A long block is any engine assy with heads, a short block assy is any engine assy without heads, that is the easiest definition(it may vary a little but that is the easiest way to look at it) maybe what you are asking is if it is a 318LA motor or a 318A motor(also known as a wide block or poly motor) If so a 77 would and should be a 318LA. The poly 318 was built until 1967 I believe. Hope this helps.
