Gordon,
I have a 98.5 24 valve Cummins with the NV 4500 5 speed that ate up the 3rd gear sybchros; shortly thaereafter there was an article in the TDR about this happening to others. I take very good care of my truck, but do like to push the right hand pedal through its full range of motion. Apparently it is a function of the amount of torque sent through from that capable six cylinder. Of note about one year ago I lost 5 the gear because of a shaft that is not fully splined. The 5 th gear would work its' nut loose and the gear would slide off the splines and you had a 4 speed until repaired. This was common enough that they now make a fully splined shaft for the fifth gear; this repair was covered by D/C. I do not think that this is a problem with the NV 5600 that you have.
