I have traditionally used Permatex non-hardening sealant. The High Tack (sp?) is what I have usually used, and also have used a dark (virtually black) Permatex Aviation sealant. I had a can of that dark stuff for almost 20 years and it never seemed to go bad, if you keep it sealed good.

Silicone works really nice for some things, but usually I don't use it because it tends to be messier. The High Tack has a nice little brush.

On head gaskets I have used a spray sealant called Copper Coat (sp?) with very good results.

Most important, surgically clean surfaces, then a good quality gasket, and you should never have to replace it again.
