Using a 1/2 ton housing, you may be about three inches narrower than your WDX's housing.

DON'T DO ANY MODIFICATIONS UNTIL: You get a copy of "Power Trains and Interchanges: Military/Civilian Trucks 1941 - 1971" by John H. Zentmyer It's avaliable for about $15.00 from some of the part sources listed on the page. There are numerous modification that have to be made to fit the 9-5/8 carrier into the 8-3/4 housing. I will list some:

-You need special studs made,
-You need a cover from a 3/4 ton,
-You need to recess the the axle housing to properly except the larger carrier,
-Differential side gear may need to be swapped out depending what carrier you have,
-Gaskets as well as a spacer will need to be fabricated.

Get the above book before you get to far into this project. You want to avoid any problems that could appear later on.
