All truck manufactures rate their vehicles for towing. A lot of the rating depends on the hitch your using. However, the GCVW must never be exceeded. GCVW stands for Gross Combination Vehicle Weight. Its the TOTAL weight of everything in the two vehicle and the trailer, in other words, its the rolling weight if you pulled on scales.

For example, my Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 Quad cab with a V10 engine has a GCVW of 19,000 pounds. I got on a certified scales this past summer going to the VPW rally. My GCVW was 17,760 pounds. Go by what the manufacturer recomends. If you exceed it and get in an accident, the lawyers might have a field day.

As a side note the TOUGH, new H2 Hummer only has a GCVW of 14,xxx pounds.
