If it works now-sorta- and it will work with 1/2 as much play(after adjustment), plus or minus 'hand tight' will be close enough for a 'government contract'. For the 'special' socket, use a 1/4 in extension ,backwards, over the stud, you can figure out some way to drive it, how about wraping a roll of duct tape around it to make a screwdriver handle?
