had the same problem on my '58 w100, it drove me NUTS, went through three "spare" coils, checked for shorts, etc.(had previously rewired entire truck) still turned out to just be a bad coil, now it runs excellent and i havent had a single problem with that since, ballast resistor most likely would let it start with the key on, then die as soon as the key was released to the "run" position, thats what the double ballast resistors are designed for, if one fails, then the other is a backup, if you look close on a truck with the dual ballast resistor setup you can see the leads go to the same point and then connect, just a failsafe, because if you only have one and it dies....well you're screwed(had that happen once!)good luck.
