My grandfather was a master machinist for Northern Pacific and worked on this locomotive when it went in for repairs in the Northern Pacific shops (NP owned part of SP&S).

My father has also worked on this engine when he was a helper and grease monkey on the NP during his teen years.

I used to play on this engine when it was stored behind Oaks Park in Portland. Everyone else would go to the amusement park, but I'd jump the fence and climb on the stored steam locomotives.

A couple of years ago or so SP&S 800 was on display at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. It was making run bys in the chilly Christmas weather, with lots of steam that lingered in the air. They let the public into the cab. I took my son up there and he had a ball. That's four generations of us who have been on this same locomotive.
