I don't know about custom paint scheme orders but one of my '46 wreckers(#2055) apears to have been black(at least on the inside)originally. It has the same characteristics inside the cab like you described on yours.
Mac's 46 #321 is also black on the interior and it appears to be the original color as well.
Let me know what you find out on this.
