Usually the cheapest way is to buy a couple of parts vehicles. Unfortunately they cannot all be saved & looking for & buying parts one at a time can be very costly. Often you can buy a parts truck, take all the parts you need & still sell the left-over for as much as you paid for the whole truck.
Unless you're working on something much much rarer than a Power Wagon, I've found this to work out the best.
