These sound like very good ideas/comments. Except, the black smoke under load does NOT always mean that the engine is in trouble, but, it could be as simple as the pump is "turned up" and you are getting "extra" fuel which the engine is not completely burning. My 1992 Dodge is turn up almost as much as you can - it smokes pretty heavy when you work it hard!!

I have over 200,000 miles on the truck and the engine always starts and has never been worked on!
