Hmmm. Lots of possibilities, such as:

Float level could be way too low.
Float needle valve not operating properly.
Restricted/plugged main jet.
Step-up (enrichment) jet not opening or plugged.
Loose bowl vent tube (air emulsion tube), allowing too much air to be mixed with fuel on the way to the nozzle.
Crud anywhere in the carb fuel passages.
Bad fuel.
Etc.

If it keeps running with the choke on, there is probably no problem between the tank and the carb that would restrict the volume of fuel delivered. However, a bad fuel pump could produce such low pressure that the float valve would shut off the fuel at a lower fuel level in the bowl, although this in and of itself would probably not make a great enough difference.

If it eventually runs out of fuel when running with the choke on, then there is probably a restriction or other problem between the tank and the carb that prevents adequate delivery volume.

Check the pump, lines, filter, and overhaul the carb if necessary. It's probably a carburetor-related problem.
