I have two critiques:
1) Isn't the 450-500 ft-lb of the stock Cummins or the 660 ft-lb available with the soup-up kits enough? There's a limit to what these transfer cases, transmissions and axles can take. I don't see any move towards heavy duty 2.5 ton type cast iron transfer cases.
2) These big diameter wheels/low profile tires are all for looks and are terrible for off-road use. How much does it cost to replace a dinged 19" aluminum rim? How many aftermarket tires are available in 19", especially for trucks (Michelin MXX3 Pilotes are great for BMWs, but not for trucks). The more air/rubber between the wheel and the ground, the better the off-road ride and traction. The whole idea of big wheels/low profile tires is for ultra high performance sports cars and BMW type sports sedans, for more precise cornering and more predictable handling at adhesion limits on pavement. If I had a 20" wheel on a truck, I'd want it in steel and I'd mount a 12.5R20 Michelin XL (40.7" tall) on it. I'm sure doesn't doesn't have that Unimog spec tire in mind.
sorry to be a Scrooge. Why don't these manufacturers stop making trucks like cars and start taking mechanical cues (NOT JUST STYLING cues) from Power Wagons or Unimogs, and build some real trucks that are built to be beaten around a bit? Why doesn't Toyota import the HJ75 diesel Landcruiser Troopcarrier with 5spd and steel split rims instead of the pimpmobile they call a Landcruiser?
