Jim,

That is ia often asked questionthat is difficult for anyone to answer without seeing the truck. I recently saw a book listing old truck prices and they listed early PWs as: parts truck only - $500, mint condition as factory new $14,000.

I think the you have to ask yourself a few questions. How much of the needed work can you do yourself? Are you willing to throw at least another $1200 at it just to make it driveable - brake shoes, cylinders, tires, fuel pump, fuel tank service, seals, changing old lube fluids, repacking wheel bearings, hoses, etc?

The other side of the coin - those are all replaceable parts or service that should be done anyway. I feel that the condition of the the sheet metal is the most important. The truck has the box - very important. How is the wood in the box? You can plan on about $300 to re do just the wood and strips.

The mechanical condition of the truck being unknown has to be factored in. I just bought a truck in very similar condition. I had to make the first offer. I offered $1000. The owner mentioned he wanted $2000. We settled at $1250. I found out later he had purchased it two weeks before for $250.

I have come to the conclusion that how bad you want the truck has to be entered into the equasion. I know this dosen't answer your question completely, but I didn't want to pass up the chance to help out a "virgin."
