Civilian engine in M-37?

I have a 1962 M-37B1 with a non-original engine. Serial # is P2*488503*. * = an upsidedown star. Under the distributor is 752, and under that 7-23. Under the starter is 632929-2. It's painted forest green on the upper portions, but under all the gunk on the bottom and oil pan it's light turquoise. The engine looks like the 230 in my other M-37, but I suspect the engine is from a civilian power wagon that was hastily painted army green.
Could it have been made on 7-23-52? Is it a 230 and how do I find out what size it is? What does the P2 and stars mean in the serial number? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Alan H
