Hi Dave,

Regarding the slant six distributor, does the article say which year, engine, etc. it is from?

I can't recall for certain what the drive shaft was like on the civilian slant-six distributors, but it seems like the 1960-1972 models had a drive GEAR instead of a drive tab/tang on the end of the shaft. It's been a long time since I've looked at one, so I could certainly be wrong. Maybe the gear is removable and the shaft also has a tab??? The 1960-1972 civilian slant sixes used a combination vacuum/centrifugal advance setup, so if the drive shaft will mate properly with the 230's oil pump drive gear, it might work OK on the civilian Power Wagon, as long as the Power Wagon's carb is correct for the 230 and has a vacuum advance port.

Some people have hooked up vacuum/centrifugal distributors using a vacuum signal direct from the intake manifold, BUT this will NOT produce the same vacuum signal profile as the port on the PW's carb.

Swapping distributors on an M37 is trickier, since the military oil pumps had an offset slot that mated with an offset distributor drive tab. A lot of people installed civilian Power Wagon distributors by grinding down the drive tab so that it was offset, but to get it to fit, they had to grind it down so thin that it would rattle around in the drive slot and cause very inconsistent timing. You must install a civilian oil pump in the M37 if you use a civlian PW distributor.

I'd be interested in knowing more about the slant-six-to-230 distributor conversion. I'll check with you offline.

Alan
