What are the correct canister oil filter connections?

The '68 WM300 I just bought did not have an oil filter on it. It had a U shaped bypass line and I believe (but, I am not sure) it ran between the top (1/4") pipe connection and the center (1/4") connection and the bottom 1/8" was plugged. The plugs that I am refering to are on the drivers side of the engine between the dipstick and starter. But, my '63 parts truck had it set up so that the top fitting was the connected to the inlet (top) connection of the oil filter housing and the bottom was connected to the outlet (bottom) of the oil filter housing and the center connection was plugged. However, this truck had spun a bearing about 13 years ago and sat ever since. This is the way I installed it after cleaning it all out and installing a new filter. I did fill the housing w/ a quart of oil. When I started the engine again I had no oil pressure. So the question is what are the proper connections? I can't believe that they changed this between '63 and '68. That means I am probably right about how thw '69 was connected and the '63 was wrong. Thanks, Andy Tierney
