we've been running a '54 m37 for about 9 years now
and its been reliable, except for an engine problem
caused by a careless mechanic mis-assembling rod
bearing caps.

ours has been re-done to run on 12 volts with a
commercial alternator, and the starter and distributor
from a '50's civilian dodge (some of the m37's had
an offset drive dog for the distributor, which means
that the oil pump must be replaced with a civilian
unit also)

we replaced the original gages with stewart-warner
commercial units which fit and worked perfectly.

we replaced almost everything in the brake system
with real n.o.s. dodge parts (beware of oriental
replacements sold by some dealers-- they're no good)
and the m37 will stop alright-- but-- the brakes
will fade a bit with a long twisty downgrade and
a heavy load.

in my opinion, given a careful operator, the m37
is the very best vehicle in its size range and
should be a good choice for you.
