at the tune-up shopa I worked in we did routine cyl balance tests at every tune-up. Disconnect the coil and crank engine while listening for the rhythm, if you hear dit-dit-dit- daah- dit-dit, your compression is questionable. You can hear a difference of only 10#, which is insignificant. Only do a compression test if the 'rythm method 'shows a weak cyl.If you remove the dist capwhile doing the rhythm test, you might be able to spot the bad cyl be watching which cyl the rotor points to when the 'daah' happens. And never bother to do a 'wet' test, the amount of oil is too random to give an accurate answer, if rings are THAT bad, you'll see it in the blowby.
