360 Intake???

I'm slowly getting my totally stock 1974 W200
put back together. I installed the intake manifold (360 cid) and noticed that the inverted "U" shaped holes in the center of the head are not covered by the intake. Is this correct? It was so gunked up when I took it apart That you couldn't see these holes. If they are supposed to be covered how do you do it?
