They were produced as cab and chassis and then sent to bodybuilders for the coachwork I suppose. I had a GMC workshop that was the same, body was dated one month after chassis / cab.
The fact that the coachbuilder supplied the reflectors probably accounts for the fact that this late-42 T215 truck had similar marble reflectors to those found on VCs in 1940 (Anthes though, not King Bee - visually almost identical but look at the layout of the four centre marbles in this image of both)
