Gasket behind timing chain

Behind the timing chain and sprocket is a metal plate with a gasket between it and the engine block( according to the parts manual).
Do I have to take the large sprocket off to get the plate off? I don't see any other way. If so can I just mark the sprocket locations and put it back together without effecting the timing? Thanks for the help!
