Depends on what you want the tow truck to do. If you want to cruise on the freeway, then a more modern truck-tractor would be in order. Nice ex-military line haul trucks such as the I-H Cargostars with single rear axles, diesel engines and auto transmissions show up periodically at gov't auctions. If you just need to hop short distances or don't mind being the slowest vehicle on the freeway, then a D/W500 w/ a V8 would probably be able to move your load with a good fifth wheel trailer.
