Of course you would want to protect your investment, and your time spent working for Uncle Sam has most likely trained you to understand that anything not bolted down will not be there when you get back.
I have heard that in some areas it was common pratice to carry a spare rotor with you for when you needed to "borrow" a jeep, etc. People had to remove the entire cap, wires, etc to be sure they would still have a truck whn they got back.
But I think you have solved that problem by removing the head!
