I am going to step out on a limb here so please don't take this as the final word. I believe the main advantage of an alternator is the ability to produce a constant 12-14 volt charge at very low engine rpm's. The generator seems to produce very low voltage at low rpm's and too much voltage at higher rpm's hence the "dim to bright" headlight senerio (the regulator plays into this as well). I guess if you are doing a faithful restore, you could keep the generator, but if you want a easier/cheaper/more reliable source of juice, go with the alternator. The other thing to consider is that if you are 200 miles from home and your generator goes on the fritz, you will have a hard time finding a replacement at the local parts store.

Just check out the local car shows and note how few entries are still using generators.

I am not sure what year they did away with the generator in most cars. Around 68?

The alternator also does not require oiling.

Best Wishes
Lonnie
