I had a 55 flat fender that was painted black over the original yellow. I used a product called GOOF OFF to remove the top coat of black on part of the cab. It didn't seem to harm the original paint if I didn't leave it on to long. However it was VERY time consuming and the product had a really strong odor. I don't think it would be practical to do a whole truck.
