Gasoline fumes don't rise more than 4 feet above the floor. That's why all electrical equipment in an auto service shop must be more than 4 feet above finished floor. Conduits that run down from electrical devices must be equipped with a sealoff device to prevent vapors from traveling up the conduit.
Hydrocarbon vapors only rise so far unless they are assisted by mechanicle means. The guys who fill scuba tanks with gas powered compressors run the compressor intake 12 feet above the engine exhaust so they are assured of clean air.
Wood stoves or propane or kerosene heaters should be mounted or hung more than 4 feet above the floor.
