I know a guy who has one of those outdoor furnaces and heats his very large shop and house with it. It heats water which circulates through pipes embedded in the floor slab. It's a neat system that works well, but is definitely not cheap. Last I saw, he was burning waste oil which he gets for free from service stations, but it will also burn wood. Some of these will burn wood, coal, natural gas, fuel oil, or waste oil by changing only the burner. Commercial or government maintenance shops that do lots of oil changes can do well with a waste oil burner. I burn small amounts of waste oil in my wood stove by draining the oil into a box full of sawdust and putting the whole thing in the stove.
