Depends on the number of people in the household, the size of the tank, the age of the drainfield, the number of lines in it and the soil type.
Mine started to back up 5-6 years after the house was new. Since then I have had it pumped every 4. IF it clogs up you are in trouble, as the "solids" then can stop-up the drainfield lines irreversibly and you may need a whole new drainfield. The expert at the health department told me as a general rule to have it pumped every 3-5 years, and don't waste money on products that are added to supposedly break down matter. He said they don't really work.
