axle breakage and differrential centering

How much of a problem is rear axle shaft breakage in anything less than extreme offroad use? I am contemplating using a centered differential setup but before I do I thought I'd bounce the pros and cons off of you guys. Has anyone here used a centered rear diff? Big difference/advantages? Would you do it again?
