Set your points right and use a vacuum gauge. set your timing so you vacuum is as high as you can get it (@18-19 at sea level) and drive it. If it doesn't ping and the vacuum stays up you're fine. If it does, turn it back to where it doesn't while pulling uphill under load at low RPM. If you vacuum drifts up and down a bit at an idle your dwell is off. if you can't get it up over 16 (at sea level) you have bad valves, intake leak, etc. They are handy little items...
