The after-type has larger shafts, gears and bearings than the earlier model. Given that the gears are spur cut, I would put my bet on the after-type rather than the NP420. Some transmission guys consider the after-type to be a spur gear NP420 because of size. The only problem with 3rd gear is the drivers ability to shift properly.
