which tranny on a '49 PW?

I called a large PW parts place today but he couldn't remember off hand which trans went in the 49 model civ. PW. Not the NP 420, of course, but the non synchro. He also said the trans that went in the 49 model was superior to the one that went in the 51-56 series. Anyone care to elaborate on the differences between these two non-synchro trannies, and how they stack up against the NP 420?
