Hi Dave,
Most likely what happened was this (since I have broke so many left front hubs that I have lost count!) When you are pulling a stuck object in reverse, all of the weight and torque is transfered to the front axle, which is a little less beefy than the rear axle. Everytime that I have broke a front hub, I've been pulling another vehicle out of a jam, with my lockers engaged. That front hub is the lightest weakest component in your drive train and it is better that you break that part than breaking a half shaft or axle. (unless you have irreplaceable hubs) I no longer pull in reverse with my differential locked (ARB's) and I have not broken another hub. I don't think it is a major concern, and if you have a winch, you wouldn't have to ever pull someone out in reverse. Another cause is too much right foot, these rigs are geared low enough that with a little experience you don't need to bash that throttle, it just breaks parts and caused needless expenses. Drive reasonably and you should never have to worry about that hub.
