Winch cable maintenance ----

What is best recommended to preserve the winch cable on the PW ?? It's dry right now and although I'd rather leave it that way due to the "clean" look, I realize I really shouldn't since the truck is stored outside. I've thought about just pouring oil over it, grease up the top windig really good ---- or as I said ---- leave it dry.
