Winch mess

After driving around for years with the winch cable wadded up on the drum I finally unspooled it, oiled it and wound it back up in nice neat rows. Looked better, but the first time I used it the cable slide down into the row under it with about 20' left out. Now it is PINCHED in there! Appearantly, while it looked nice and neat, it wasn't tight enough. I've tried jerking on it with the tractor but I just drag the B3 around, no luck. My question is- can I attach the cable hook to a solid object and then back the truck up. Or chain the pintle hitch to a solid object and pull with the tractor? Since the drum will be out freespooling and the force comes from the opposite end the shear pin is not involved in the process I don't want to bend or break anything. Any of you experienced winch guys have any ideas or is it time to wheel out the torch? I rather sacrifice 30' of cable than bend a frame or crack my winch!
Thanks for any and all thoughts.
