you might try to buy a cheap multy meter. you can get one at walmart for about 16$. Run a continuity test. Just unplug the two wires, and put the test probe into both wires (the meter has two probes a+ and a-) that will tell you if you have a break in the wires. Or you could ground one wire out (leave the other pluged in then swith them out)if the gauge pegs than its good.
