Try looking up behind the dash with a flash-light, older trucks & dodge cars ran a 10 gauge wire from the starter relay , through the firewall, through the ammeter, then back out the firewall leading to the alternator(main charging circuit). after time the ammeter begins to fail, which creates an overload on the hot-side of the ammeter, which in turn affects the rest of the ignition system, after awhile the wire melts & could catch on fire ,or just leave you stranded in BFE. just find a 10guage in-line fuse, disconnect the ammeter & install the inline. if possible replace the ammeter with a volt-meter( only needs a 16Gua. wire & ground.
