I agree. The old parts store (non chain) nearest my house is run by a bunch of gearheads who drive their project vehicles to work. Sevice was good, and they tried hard to get the parts I needed but things really got better after I was able to drive the M37 with the Cummins in it to the store...
A NAPA was built accross the street that didn't stay open more than two years. The NAPA accross town is just as bad as this one was (only had computers and a staff of young kids). There is a NAPA twenty miles away (owned by an old guy and his son who restores Chevy pickups) that is worth driving to when my local independent can't get a part.
