I did it just a few months ago. I had to twist the metal retainer just enough to get it around the axle, and it took some significant effort to do it. It had a slight permanent twist to it when I got done, but not enough to be a problem. It still bolted up nice and snug. It sure beats having to take off the tires, brake drums, backing plates, hubs, wheel bearings, spindles, axle shafts and upper and lower king pin housing!
