Gin Poles are vertical members that were used in the 40's & 50's to construct transmission line towers (and oil dericks) when a crane could not get to the site.
the Gin Pole has a crown block and is secured to the tower then used to make the section lifts that could not be done with a crane. the pole is then boot-strapped up the tower to make the next lift - then lowered when construction is complete. still used in the construction of tall communication towers.
almost all power line towers are now built using Air-Cranes
trucks have A-Frames like in the pictures below.
